“The essence of a home lies in its people, culture and way of life.” – Bhavik Thakkar
There are houses and then there are homes. As architects, interior designers and project managers, while creating a residence, our aim is always to create a home that serves as a sanctuary for memories. Our design process honours this intent: during the Immerse stage, we go beyond the brief and document the client’s existing way of life, capturing both the tangible as well as intangible aspirations.
The Architectural Narrative
Home of Infinite Joy is an expression of Ultra Modernist Architecture, with defined geometries, rich materiality and soaring volumes. Upon entering the precinct, a floating verandah – hovering over lush greenery – creates a sensorial threshold, marking the transition from the world outside to the private family sanctuary within. A cozy, intentional foyer welcomes you, where a semi-circular staircase draws the eye upward, leading to the main living space on the first floor. This journey is punctuated by a deliberate increase in volume, heightening the sense of arrival and expansion.
The Heart of the Home
The central Courtyard, acts as both an anchor and a graceful transition between the public and semi-public spaces of the home. With 30 foot wide sliding glass doors towards the north-western balcony verandah, the living room is designed to create an experientially rich ambience with a variety of seating options and play in volumes. From warm earthy tones of the limewashed walls and polished marble flooring to the raw, uninhibited beauty of natural teak wood and Indian granite, this space invigorates a sense a calm balanced with just the right amount of rawness to create a sophisticated living experience.
Climatology & Technical Rigor
This four storeyed residence is a case study in passive cooling and sustainable design. Despite a zero-lot-line constraint to the north-east, the home maintains a minimal reliance on mechanical cooling through strategic cross-ventilation facilitated by the central courtyard. A dry-clad sandstone skin creates a 50 mm thermal buffer against the exterior walls, drastically reducing heat gain during Kanpur’s extreme summers. Every window is a deliberate aperture, informed by detailed lux studies to modulate light quality and frame specific views.
Joyous & Enriching
Context-inspired features, such as the second-floor jharokhas, flank the courtyard to create light-borrowing bay windows for the bedrooms. Imagine reclining in these window seats, watching the rain or listening to the gentle splashing of the water body in the courtyard below. These are the curated, joyous moments especially designed for the residents of this beautiful Home of Infinite Joy.
