What happens when a single-family home in suburban Columbia, South Carolina, is viewed through a fresh lens? For this 6-bedroom bungalow, the brief demanded modern luxury, but our solution looked deeper—creating an all-season residence that lives and breathes, in addition to providing comforting luxury.
The Climatic Heart: Rather than relying solely on mechanical cooling, the design centres around an internal courtyard. This space acts as both the functional and climatic heart of the home, regulating temperature and facilitating natural air circulation year-round.
A Journey of Water and Light: The entry sequence draws inspiration from traditional Kerala architecture, where a tranquil water feature welcomes residents before leading them toward the central courtyard. Beyond, the expansive double-height living area dissolves the boundaries between interior and exterior. Using slide-and-fold doors, the home opens completely to a rear garden and porch, allowing the living, dining, and kitchen areas to transition into a seamless entertaining suite.
Passive Performance: Every room is a study in natural light and cross-ventilation. By carefully modulating openings, we’ve maximized solar heat gain for the winter months while ensuring the home remains breezy and shaded during the South Carolina summer.
